My brother and I were talking the other day about him needing a new truck. The one he has now is a super basic 2008 F150 with the 4.2 liter V6 that is showing its age and the abuse it’s been put through. He wants to upgrade to a V8 but doesn’t know how he can convince his fiance that he needs it. He has a list of wants which are as follows, Black, Ford, V8, Single Cab, LSD, and a Bed-liner. So I configured one with the 6.7L power-stroke turbo diesel (which isn’t what he had in mind when he said V8) for him. And for a mere $45,289, he could get his dream truck.
The next step is to convince the missus that it’s needed.

Does he put down the mileage to offset the cost of a diesel truck? Or haul over 7000lbs on a regular basis?

He works as a superintendent for a local construction company and drives/hauls regularly.

Maintenance and the risk of being stuck on the side of the road. This will work especially well if he has kids. Wives hate thinking their child could be stuck on the side of the road.
$45k for a single cab diesel?

It’s Ford. I expected closer to $55000

Does he definitely want a 250? Because a 150 with the 3.5TT is worth at least taking for a test drive, and you could go 4 door. F-250 Super Duty Platinums are very comfy...like a nice SUV that happens to have a bed.

Same way I convinced my wife I needed a Celica: I came home with it and said, “Honey, I bought something!”

He’s pretty set on a V8, so an EB150 probably wouldn’t satisfy that.

That’s what I’m saying. I think he should just show up with it.

He should. In fact, this may be his last chance to buy a vehicle determined by his wants only. That or he could play the long game like me: get the wife the nice car, to distract her from my auto choices.

She also need a new car. She has a 1998(?) V6 Mustang with damn near 200K miles.

Get a Powerstroke or your truck is a joke. :)
As OPPO’s powerstroke lover i approve this post because powerstroke is best

Before I comment further, I guess what really matters is their financial situation. Does she work? Can she/they afford a new car for either person? Do they have shared finances? Blah, blah, and blah.
If they’re about to spend a button on a wedding and honeymoon, and potentially a house (if they wanted), then yeah, maybe a loaded V8 newer TRUUUUUUCK isn’t the best idea. Conversely, people should drive what they want, and it does pertain to his job.
TLDR: if money is not an issue, he (and she) should be able to do whatever they want.

They make okay money as far as I know, it’s not really something we talk about, but he’ll probably end up with either a ‘15 or a ‘16 when the 2017's come out. Or she’ll end up with a FiST or FoST. I guess you could say that we’re a Ford family.

I’ve heard that Ford’s newest powerstoke will be out-putting 500HP and almost 1000ft/lbs of torque.
![]() 07/17/2016 at 02:22 |

they are pretty close now with the 6.7's
they are at 440hp and 860 torque. With a tuner you easily could make 1000torque im sure :)
Wish my old 7.3 could do that

I really can’t imagine paying $45k for a truck with vinyl seats.
I’d be more likely to budget $15-20k for a used F250 Lariat that still has some life left in it.

I wouldn’t spend that much on a truck, I’m happy with my $2000 Thunderbird that I’ll probably end up dumping $45000 into. But if he bought it, you better believe I will drive it.

It's easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

At my old job I drove a 7.3 around town hauling mowers. Really solid engine.

That’s the truth

My wife would be all over that.

Well I guess the PowerStroke is its own monster with a chip. Think I saw one good for 90hp / 150lbs-ft with no hardware. Still hard to imagine going with an F-250 Super Duty but only a single cab...think I’d take a 4-door F-150 given the choice.

bulitproof but not a whole ton in the power department

He has a single cab and loves it. He isn’t obligated to drive anywhere.

It does it’s job. Pull things for a half million miles.

Fair enough...diesel + chip it is!

Say he got a great deal on the V8. The dealer had a great deal on one thanks to everyone buying the Ecoboost.

Even if he doesn’t “need” a crew cab, I would still get one for the better resale later. Unless he is committed to driving it for 20 years and until it’s absolutely used up.

Just a heads up, the new SuperDuty is launching within a year. Either these will become much cheaper off the lot, or you’ll score some sweet deals on the new model.

In base configuration, the Chevy 2500 is much better truck. I’d take the 6.2l in Chevy over the 6.7 with gas/vs diesel prices.
![]() 07/17/2016 at 10:59 |

A similar equip Silverado would be 15-20k less...
![]() 07/17/2016 at 12:59 |

But not a Ferd. The 6 drivers in my family have 8 Fords.
![]() 07/17/2016 at 13:01 |

I’m thinking that the old models will probably drop in price by $10K or so. Making them realistically affordable
![]() 07/17/2016 at 13:02 |

He is planning on putting half a million miles on it, driving to the point of no return.
![]() 07/17/2016 at 13:06 |

I don’t agree with that, a base 2500 with the 6.2 won’t last half as long as a 6.7 powerstroke F250.
![]() 07/17/2016 at 18:17 |
|
Well in that case it doesn’t really matter, but what if they have a child in the next 5 years.
![]() 07/17/2016 at 19:31 |

First if you want a tow vehicle, the new 3.5 v6 is the best 1500 engine around, seeing as ford wont offer that in their 250's the Chevy 2500 has the better engine. I personally have the opinion that diesels belong only in commercial vehicles. You have to be towing more than 15,000lbs to take advantage of what a diesel offers compared to a gasoline V8. The repayment just isn’t there, and they are a waste of money UNLESS you are towing obscenely heavy things on a daily basis.
![]() 07/18/2016 at 01:31 |

Well, that’s something he has to consider. A crew cab might be in his future.
![]() 07/18/2016 at 01:32 |

It will be a work vehicle. He’s a superintendent of a local construction company.

brand loyalty vs $15k lol .... keep buying them f150s
(i dont mind a focus RS , GT250R, or a GT, but thats abt it)

Ever regularly driven a Ford? I love my Thunderbird, my brother love their trucks, my mom loves her Edge. We are all happy with the vehicles we have. Easily worth $15K for a vehicle we know we’ll enjoy.

ask a Chevy guy (or Toyota guy, Honda guy, hell there are VW fanboys that swears by their brand)
